KUALA LUMPUR: MIC is backing MCA in calling for a review of the criteria for awarding Public Service Department (PSD) scholarships.
Party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the review was for the good of everyone."This must be done at the cabinet and they must discuss this in detail," he said after launching the Plus 8, 2009 programme yesterday.MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat was earlier reported as calling for a review on the criteria for PSD scholarships.Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk S.K. Devamany, who was also present yesterday, said it was puzzling how each of the scholarship was awarded.
"In the case of N. Arun Kumar, who scored 13 1As, he didn't get any offer, but another student who got 8 1As was offered an overseas programme. How come?" he said, adding that the department must be more transparent when awarding the scholarships.Devamany urged the government to award a PSD scholarship automatically to those who obtained 11 1As and above. He also suggested a committee be set up to study the matter case by case.Earlier, Samy Vellu said Plus 8 was a good programme to address the social problems in the community today. The programme is targeted at some 5,000 secondary students who are not academically inclined, to provide them with motivation and career choices.
