Why Koreans are drawn to Sabah
2009/12/21
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's Mount Kinabalu, its pristine islands and a chance to experience adventure through scuba diving, are key attractions for South Koreans.
Based on statistics from the Sabah Tourism Board website, 43,660 South Koreans visited the state from January to September.Korean Air, one of three airlines offering direct flights between Kota Kinabalu and Incheon in Seoul, sees potential in more travellers from other parts of the world coming to Sabah through its extensive network.Korean Air Kota Kinabalu office regional manager David E.S. Jeong said the airline flies to 15 destinations in the United States, and is connected to Russian, Chinese and Japanese cities."Russians like to save their money for holidays and some of them stay in Sabah for a month."Next year onwards, we want to focus on the untapped United States market so that visitors from there will come to Sabah via our airline.
"They will only need to take one flight, with flying time of five hours, from Incheon to get to Sabah," Jeong said at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport.South Koreans like to visit Sabah's nature-based destinations while others come here for golf and scuba diving and other adventurous activities like paragliding.Recently, the airline flew in 4,400 Amway dealers and their families for a holiday.Jeong also said while many South Koreans preferred to travel during the year-end to escape winter, Malaysians, especially Sabahans and Sarawakians go to Seoul and other destinations like Jeju Island to experience the snow.Apart from operating four weekly flights to Kota Kinabalu, Korean Air also flies to Kuala Lumpur with largely passengers on business trips.
