Poor response from private doctors

2010/03/30

KUALA LUMPUR: The response from private medical practitioners to offers to serve in government hospitals is still poor, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai here yesterday.

He said only 18 of the 162 vacancies offered nationwide this month had been filled to date.

"I urge more private practitioners to take up the ministry's offer to serve in government clinics," said Liow, adding that the ministry had allocated RM31 million this year for the additional posts offered. He was speaking during a working visit to Hospital Ampang here.

The ministry has been offering private doctors to serve in government clinics since 2002.

It is learnt that the 18 who have taken up the offers are in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Kelantan, Sarawak and Malacca.

The private practitioners are paid RM80 per hour, with working hours from 8am to 5pm for normal working days (sessional). For clinics that provide extended hour services, the working hours are from 5pm to 9.30pm for Mondays to Fridays and 8am to noon for Saturdays (locum).

Besides the sessional and locum offers in government clinics, private practitioners are also offered to practise in government hospitals on sessional basis at a rate of RM100 per hour for those in the medical field and RM120 per hour for surgical specialists.

So far, only 20 private medical specialists are providing their services in government hospitals.

At present, there are 15,000 doctors providing their services in the public sector while there are 10,000 private practitioners.

Private medical practitioners who are interested in the offers can visit the website, www. moh.gov.my/MohPortal/categoryView.jsp, for more details.
