Public helps police to cut crime

2010/04/26

KUALA LUMPUR: Greater cooperation between the public and police has brought down the number of street crimes by 28 per cent in hot spots across four states this year. Inspector-General of police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said another factor in the reduction was the deployment of more uniformed personnel.

Last year, the Home Ministry had identified 50 hot spots in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Penang. Several initiatives were implemented, including increasing the presence of policemen.

Three-thousand Civil Defence and Rela personnel were also trained to provide support and 500 closed-circuit television cameras were installed in the hot spots.

"Enhancing patrols and setting up mobile bases are part of plans to reduce the crime rate in these hot spots," Musa said after launching the ExxonMobil Crime Prevention Awareness Week, which was organised by the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation in Jalan Kia Peng yesterday.

He said 9,984 street crimes were reported between Jan 1 and April 15 last year compared with 7,330 cases this year.

In the latest figures, the biggest drop were in motorcycle theft, general theft, snatch theft and non-firearm gang robbery.
