Ummu extols the virtues of polygamy
2009/12/21
KUALA LUMPUR: Ummu Khair Fatimah Md Ramli wants to send out a strong message about the virtue of polygamy.
Such marriages promote closeness in a family, the 20-year-old newlywed said yesterday. "My family doesn't mind me becoming the third wife. I want to make a difference by being in a polygamous marriage." Ummu said many women were afraid because they did not understand the core values of such marriages. "I got attracted to the idea after attending a religious course that talked about polygamy. And that is where I met my husband, Mokhtar. He was the speaker," said the blushing new bride. Ummu plans to have a family of her own soon and hopes to set a good example to other polygamous couples, as well as change the negative perception about polygamy.
Her husband, Mokhtar Tajuddin, 45, said women should not fear being in a polygamous marriage. "Polygamy is a beautiful thing. It is one of Prophet Muhammad's sunnah. Many women disagree because they refuse to share their husbands," he said. Mokhtar said with his recent marriage to Ummu, his family had now extended and he had more responsibilities as a husband and father."I hope that I can be a fair husband to my three wives and six children," said Mokhtar at a mass wedding reception at Ikhwan Coffee House in Bukit Bintang yesterday.Ummu, a dormitory warden at Asrama Perempuan Ikhwan, and her husband, a motivational speaker with Global Ikhwan, were one of three polygamous couples out of the 10 couples at the reception.
